8 Common BJJ Myths — Clear Them Up Before You Start

Do you need to be strong? Flexible? Will you lose weight? Does it work for self-defense? Eight myth-busters for anyone hesitating because of age, gender or fitness.

Common misconceptions people have before starting jiu-jitsu. So many people hesitate because of these. Let's clear them up one by one.

1. "Don't you have to be strong?"

Nope. This is exactly the appeal of jiu-jitsu: a smaller person controlling a bigger one with technique. Strength helps, of course, but there are definitely moments when technique beats strength. Once you experience that, you can't quit.

2. "Don't you need to be flexible?"

You don't need to be flexible at the start at all. You actually get more flexible by doing jiu-jitsu. Most people start out stiff.

3. "I should get in shape first"

This is where you get in shape. People who put it off to build fitness first are still not here a year later. Just come. The fitness follows.

4. "Don't you get hit? Sounds painful"

Jiu-jitsu has no striking. It's not trading punches; it's grappling: gripping, pinning and choking. You might get a bruise or two, but you won't get punched in the face.

5. "Will I lose weight?"

You will. It's cardio and strength in one. An hour of rolling and you'll be drenched. But to be honest, if you don't watch your diet, nothing changes. You can't out-train a bad diet.

6. "Does it really work for self-defense?"

In a one-on-one, unarmed situation on the ground, it's genuinely strong. Multiple attackers or an armed opponent is a different story. Don't get overconfident: the best self-defense is avoiding the situation.

7. "Am I too old for this?"

Not at all. Starting in your 30s or 40s is perfectly fine. For details, see the adult BJJ guide.

8. "Isn't it hard for women?"

Nope. Since the essence of jiu-jitsu is a smaller person handling a bigger one with technique, it actually suits women well. See the women's BJJ guide.
