BJJ Gi Buying Guide — Fabrics, Sizing and IBJJF Rules
Buying your first gi? Fabric types, how to pick a size and IBJJF gi requirements, all in one guide.
The gi is the most important piece of equipment in jiu-jitsu. Buy the wrong one and it can be uncomfortable, or even get you disqualified at a tournament. Here is a complete guide for anyone choosing their first gi.
Gi requirements (IBJJF)
Official IBJJF tournaments are strict about gi specs. There are detailed rules on sleeve length, pant length, collar thickness and more, and if your gi fails the check you may not be allowed to compete.
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Collar (lapel) | Max 1.3 cm thick, max 5 cm wide |
| Sleeve opening | At least 7 cm of space |
| Sleeve length | Within 2 cm of the wrist with the arm extended |
| Pant length | Down to within 2 cm above the ankle bone |
| Color | White, royal blue or black (jacket, pants and collar the same color) |

Gi fabric types
- Single weave — Light and affordable. A good first gi. Less durable.
- Double weave — Thick and tough. Heavy, but hard to grip. Can make weight management harder.
- Gold weave — In between single and double.
- Pearl weave — Light and tends to dry quickly.
Choosing a size
Sizing varies from brand to brand. Adults use A0–A6, but those sizes often don't match every body type. Start with your height and weight, and if possible try it on in person or buy somewhere that accepts returns.
Going slightly bigger to allow for shrinkage is also an option. A cotton gi can shrink after washing.
Allowed brands and colors can differ from event to event. Check the tournament's detailed rules in the ROLLER app ahead of time.
