How to Get More Members for Your BJJ Gym — 7 Marketing Strategies

Instagram Reels, local search and Google Business Profile, referrals and tournament promotion. Recruitment and retention strategies you can put to work at your gym right away.

Word of mouth is the biggest marketing channel for a BJJ gym, but on its own it rarely brings in enough new members. This article sums up seven strategies for attracting and keeping new members that you can put to work at your gym right away.

1. Turn the free trial class into a system

A free one-time trial class, promoted through Instagram DMs, your Google Business Profile and local community groups, is the most powerful offer you have. Just don't let it end at the trial — make a habit of following up with a sign-up message within 24 hours.

2. Instagram Reels — short and often

Post short 15–30 second Reels — technique demos, sparring highlights, member interviews and gym atmosphere clips — consistently, at least three times a week. Instagram now allows only five hashtags per post, so pick narrow, precise ones such as #BJJ, #jiujitsu and #[yourcity]BJJ.

3. Local search visibility — location keywords

Make sure your gym shows up near the top when people search for location keywords like "BJJ near me" or "[neighborhood] jiu-jitsu". Set up and complete your Google Business Profile and publish posts or articles alongside it. Reviews and trial-class write-ups from real members work best.

4. Referral incentives

Set up a referral program: when an existing member brings a friend, give both of them a perk such as a free month or a free gi. Starting alongside someone you know also makes the first few months easier to stick with.

5. Compete, then promote the results

When your members place at a tournament, promote it actively on social media. Photos, short interviews and medal shots prove your gym's level and turn into new sign-up inquiries.

6. Prevent drop-off in the first three months

Right after joining, new members haven't bonded with the gym yet. In a beginner's first month, build a sense of belonging: a quick weekly check-in message, an early first stripe on the white belt, and pairing them with training partners.

7. Automate gym admin to free up time for marketing

Once the busywork of managing members is automated, you have time for marketing. Hand repetitive tasks like confirming payments, taking attendance and chasing late fees to gym management software, and spend your own time creating content and recruiting new members.

Marketing automation starts with data

You can only see your ROI if you track which channel each member came from and who brought in friends. ROLLER gym management automatically detects and shows one part of this — churn signals (long absences). For sign-up sources, record them yourself in each member's notes field.
