Seeding Guide — The [1,8,5,4,3,6,7,2] Slot Order Explained

The standard seed slot order that spreads top athletes apart until the final. 8-, 16- and 32-athlete patterns, bye distribution, 5 seeding criteria and gym separation when there are no seeds.

The most powerful way to reduce luck in a bracket = seeding. Here we fully unpack the standard seed placement [1, 8, 5, 4, 3, 6, 7, 2], the slot order that spreads the strongest athletes apart until the final so they don't pile up in one half.

1. What Is Seeding?

Ranking the athletes in a division 1, 2, 3... and spreading them across the bracket so the strongest don't meet until the final. Seed 1 = the strongest. Seeds are based on rankings, past placings, coach recommendations and so on. IBJJF World Championship brackets also give seed numbers to the top-ranked athletes.

2. Standard Slot Order for an 8-Athlete Bracket

The standard placement — [1, 8, 5, 4, 3, 6, 7, 2]. From top to bottom:

SlotSeedRound 1 matchHalf
0#1M1: 1 vs 8Top half
1#8M1: 1 vs 8Top half
2#5M2: 5 vs 4Top half
3#4M2: 5 vs 4Top half
4#3M3: 3 vs 6Bottom half
5#6M3: 3 vs 6Bottom half
6#7M4: 7 vs 2Bottom half
7#2M4: 7 vs 2Bottom half

3. Three Core Principles

  • ① Seeds 1 and 2 can't meet before the final — Seed 1 is in the top half, seed 2 in the bottom half. If each wins their half, they meet in the final.
  • ② Seeds 3 and 4 can't meet before the semifinals — Seed 3 sits inside the bottom half, seed 4 inside the top half. Different quarters.
  • ③ Weak seeds are paired with strong seeds — 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7 (the top seeds meet the weakest opponents in round one).

4. Bye Distribution Principles

With fewer than 8 athletes, empty slots become byes. The principles:

  • Protect the top seeds — Byes go to the highest seeds first. Seed 1 → bye first.
  • Spread the byes — Place them so two byes don't cluster in the same half.
  • No bye-vs-bye matches — The slot algorithm automatically avoids placing two byes next to each other.

5. Seeding Criteria (for Organizers)

Seeding criteria you can use at local BJJ tournaments:

  1. ① IBJJF ranking points — Athletes with an official ranking first
  2. ② Past placings — 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in the same division
  3. ③ Higher belt — Higher belt within the same division (for divisions not split by belt)
  4. ④ Coach / organizer recommendation — Subjective judgment allowed when information is lacking
  5. ⑤ No seeding (all equal) — Apply only gym separation + bye distribution

6. Without Seeding Info — Gym Separation

When there is no seeding info, apply gym separation instead of seeds. Place athletes so two from the same gym don't meet in round one, plus automatic bye distribution.

7. Slot Order for 16- and 32-Athlete Brackets

The same principle applied recursively — a boustrophedon (zigzag) pattern:

  • 16 athletes: [1, 16, 9, 8, 5, 12, 13, 4, 3, 14, 11, 6, 7, 10, 15, 2]
  • 32 athletes: the 16-athlete slots above, expanded recursively for each half

The key structure: seeds 1 and 2 at the two ends (top and bottom), seeds 3 and 4 in the quarters just inside, and seeds 5–8 further inside.

8. For Athletes — Know Your Seed

  • If you're seed 1 — You meet a weaker opponent in round one. Pacing through to the final matters. Don't get complacent.
  • Middle seeds (3–6) — Your first match is against an evenly matched opponent. Go in ready for a real fight.
  • Lower seeds (7–8+) — You face a top athlete in round one. The first match is the hardest. Use the element of surprise.

9. Conclusion

Seeding is "a tool that improves fairness without sacrificing efficiency." It reduces the luck in single elimination. Even hobbyist events see a big difference just by introducing simple seeding based on past placings.

ROLLER applies the standard placement automatically when you enter seeds

The organizer enters each athlete's seed number in the registration list → athletes are placed in slots [1,8,5,4,3,6,7,2] automatically, with byes distributed. Without seeds, only gym separation + bye distribution is applied (a safe default).
