Special rules for masters

  • Footlock restrictions — heel hooks depend on belt, age and ruleset. They are banned for all belts in gi matches, and in no-gi they are allowed only for adult brown and black belts, so they stay illegal in masters divisions even for no-gi brown and black belts.
  • Match length — adult matches run from 5 minutes (white) to 10 minutes (black), while Master 1 is 5 minutes for white and blue and 6 minutes for purple, brown and black, and Master 2 and up are 5 minutes for every belt.
  • Entering the adult division — the IBJJF sets no maximum age for adult and masters divisions, so athletes of masters age can also enter the adult division.

Strategy for masters competition

With shorter matches, focus on technical polish and energy management rather than explosive power.

  • Train for positional efficiency rather than raw stamina
  • Be thorough with warm-ups and cool-downs to prevent injury
  • Scout your opponents: learn the typical styles in your masters age group
It's never too late to start

Masters divisions put you up against athletes close to your own age. Even if you started late, you can compete whatever your age.
